Alkaline batteries are non-rechargeable. Other commonly used terms for this type of chemistry are: single-use, and disposable. Of particular importance is this:
NEVER USE RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES in smoke detectors. The reason for this is that the average 9 volt rechargeable battery, will self- discharge after 30 to 40 days leaving the battery without any power at all! That bears repeating: The battery in your smoke detector will be rendered powerless! Of course that’s unacceptable in smoke-detectors. Alkaline is the way to go, as would also be, a 9 volt lithium battery.
As well, in rechargeable battery chemistries, discharge takes place slowly and steadily over time, and a smoke detector is not the place to chance being powerless due to power depletion. There is also the issue that in rechargeable batteries such as NICD (Nickel Cadmium) for instance, there is memory effect to be aware of. If an NICD battery charged prior to full depletion of power, it will only be “topped off” at whatever level of remaining power was in it at the time of recharge. Always, but ALWAYS use NON-rechargeable batteries for your smoke detectors. It’s a matter of life and death.
9 Volt Alkaline batteries are available in two ways: in bulk packaging and on blister cards. Clearly, purchasing them in bulk, saves big $ over buying them ready for retail display. Of course, if you are a reseller, and need them in cards, there are amazing deals to be had in large quantity orders.
