One of the most popular non-rechargeable batteries around, are Alkaline Batteries. Other terms used to describe this type of chemistry are: throw-away, and single-use. This simply means that they life span of power they were manufactured to contain, will run it’s course as you use it in your applications, and once depleted, will no longer provide power. They cannot be recharged. They cease to operate once drained. It might take a long time to drain them if you only use them in operation occasionally, or it might take a short time to drain them, if you use them regularly to power your products. But once drained, they cannot be used.
Alkaline batteries have been around for many, many years. They are reliable batteries, and inexpensive too.
Alkalines are sold virtually everywhere that any batteries are sold – that’s how commonly they’re used. Whereas other types of chemistries and sizes might be a little harder to find, Alkalines are always on the shelf wherever batteries are sold.
One of the best features about Alkaline batteries is their terrific shelf-life. This can also be exprerssed as their “date-code”. It’s the amount of years the battery is able to provide power for you. Many Alkalines offer 10+ years of service.
Alkaline batteries are used in numerous applications. A few are: cameras, dog collars (electronic), remote controls, pocket flashlights, toys and radios and we haven’t really scratched the surface.
Here are some of the basics to know about, for Alkaline Batteries:
They’re made in the following sizes: AA, AAA, C, D, N, button batteries, 4LR44, A23/23A , 9 Volt , MN175 and A27/27A batteries.
All these alkaline batteries are 1.5 volt (with the obvious exception of the 9 volt sizes).
Alkaline batteries are made by every battery manufacturer. Here are the leaders:
Duracell, Energizer, Sanyo just to name a few. Of course, you can also get alkaline batteries by many, many other makers as well.
Here’s another interesting fact about Alkaline batteries. They’re environmentally friendly because they aren’t toxic and therefore, they won’t pollute landfills with toxins if discarded there. Of course, recycling is always best. Check with your local community about pick up/collection of used Alkalines.
Yet another beneficial feature and benefit of Alkaline batteries is that they don’t experience an effect called “memory effect” as do many other types of batteries. What memory effect means is this…
Memory effect is a result. It’s a reduced life cycle of a battery’s memory. This happens in some rechargeable batteries, such as NICD (Nickel Cadmium) rechargeable batteries, for example, but not in NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries. In NICD, the batteries must be fully depleted of power before being recharged to as to retain their total, original content of power. If you charge these batteries before they are fully drained, the battery will “remember” the amount of power the battery had at time of recharge and consider this level to be the total power of the battery. NIMH rechargeable batteries are immune to this effect. Meaning, one can charge and recharge them without concern for how much power remained in them at the time of charge. In Alkaline batteries, there is no charging to do. They simply live out their life span of one and only one life cycle, and when depleted, are done.
The more you read and learn about batteries, the more informed a consumer you will become. Check this out about Alkaline batteries: They offer something called low discharge/low self-discharge. This is also abbreviated in the industry as LSD – no, not the hallucinogenic drug!! All batteries discharge some of their power over time, when not in use. Not in use, simple means, sitting on the shelf or in the product, but idle, not operating.
With Alkaline batteries offering low discharge, only a tiny bit will “seap out” (in lay-terms) when not in use. This is the reason the shelf lives on alkaline batteries goes so far into the future, often 10 years +.
Because of their terrific shelf lives, low discharge rate, inexpensive price, compatibility with so many product applications and of course, reliability, it’s wise to stock up on Alkaline batteries with you find them a good price, from a reliable battery supplier.
Let’s talk for a moment about what a reliable battery supplier means. We’re not talking about retail stores though. We’re talking about purchasing them online.
There are lots of websites selling batteries today. Some are not actually the stores themselves – they are portals, which can lure you there from search engines, making you believe they have inventory, only to lead you to other sites once you click on them and it’s these other sites that have, or have AVAILABLE, the batteries you seek. Every middleman along the way will receive a portion of your dollars spent on the batteries. A reliable battery supplier, starts with one who has their own inventory at their premises. Next on the list is that they provide quality, sound, and friendly technical information about batteries to all who inquire, and do so, either live, or by reply, quickly. Shipping is also a factor. A good supplier will ship your order promptly and deliver exactly what you order, in fine condition, with no surprises on the price. At MEGAbatteries, we provide that level of customer service. We operate with integrity. We’ve been in the battery business for years and years and have established ourselves as trusted and reputable.
Many organizations, institutions, and even individual consumers alike, prefer to purchase their batteries in bulk packaging and in large quantity. They have enough experience to know that there are a few battery sizes they use over and over again. They might have children and use their batteries in their childrens toys. They might be avid photographers and need good camera batteries in ready supply. And for a host of other reasons, they require a surplus to keep in the workshop at their fingertips at any time. Resellers (merchants) are another type of customer that needs to buy batteries in volume. However, typically they need their inventory to be blister carded, ready for retail display. Buying batteries in bulk packaging is the best way to save $ on your purchase. That, and of course, buying from a seller who gives you great service, prompt shipping and competitive pricing.
