Information Article about AA NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride) Rechargeable Batteries
AA NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargeable batteries are the most popular rechargeable batteries sold today.Nickel Metal Hydride is the chemistry used to make the battery rechargeable.
AA NiMh batteries do not experience a condition known as “memory effect” and are the ideal choice for high-consumption (high-drain) devices such as digital cameras, mp3 players, GPS units and any other commonly used devices. Especially for those products using LCDs (Liquid Crystal Displays).
Let us explain what “Memory effect” means because it’s surprising how many people are unfamiliar with either the term itself, or its’ meaning. Memory Effect is a term used to explain when a battery’s total power has been reduced from recharging it before first being fully drained of power. When recharging is done before a battery has been fully depleted of power, it will charge only what has been depleted, and “remember” this as the new total capacity of it. However, NiMH chemistry batteries are immune from this effect. That therefore means that they CAN be recharged without concern for what voltage remains at the time of recharge. That’s a huge convenience for many who do not wish to keep track of the status of their batteries. Many like to recharge their batteries on a schedule, say Sunday nights. Those who do this and use NIMH rechargeables, don’t have to concern themselves with what amount of power is left in each of their batteries.
It’s therefore certainly understandable why NiMh is such a popular battery chemistry choice for busy consumers everywhere.
All batteries are rated in mAh (milleampere hours). The higher that mAh rating is, the longer it will last. In other words, the longer the run-time will be.
AA NiMh batteries are 1.2 volt and are fully replaceable to their 1.5 volt AA Alkaline counterparts, since its’ discharge curve allows them to equally power devices that were designed for 1.5 volts.
A newer generation exists of AA rechargeable NiMH batteries. It’s called low self-discharge (LSD) feature. This type of technology is great for occasional users who may not consume the energy of the battery in the typical self-discharge time of 30 to 40 days. The low self-discharge batteries will hold their charge for up to 2 years.
If you would like to use low discharge NiMH batteries, when you spot a great deal somewhere, it’s smart to grab a bunch for future use.
