Information Article about Button Batteries

The terms “Button Batteries”, Button Cells, Coin Batteries and Coin Cells, are all interchangeable. They are 1.5 volt Alkaline or Silver Oxide chemistry non rechargeable batteries. (Silver oxide cells last on average, 5 times longer than Alkaline batteries).

Button batteries are round batteries, somewhat flat, resembling a coin, with the most common dimensions ranging from 5 to12 mm in diameter by 1 to 6mm in height.

Button cells have low self-discharge. This means they discharge their energy at a very slow rate as compared to standard discharge rates and only lose a nominal portion of their power over time when not in use (idle).  

Button Cells are terrific for watches and hearing aids, for calculators and many other small battery powered products which require long, on-going service that are low-drain. Low drain means the device requires little power to operate. To illustrate this perhaps a little bit better, high-drain devices (products that require a lot of power to operate) are digital cameras and mp3 players. You can see the difference between the power needed for a digital camera versus a wrist-watch.

Other widely used applications for these coin cells are: Laser pointers,  Cameras, Alarm transmitters,  Children Books, Calculators, Blood Pressure Monitors, Sugar Level (Glucose) Detectors , and of course many others.

As with many batteries, if not most, different manufacturers market their versions of identical batteries under proprietary model numbers. Button batteries are commonly categorized in a general and universally accepted series of model numbers called: AG0, AG1, AG2, AG3, AG4, AG5, AG6, AG7, AG8, AG9, AG10, AG11, AG12 and AG13.

It is this series of numbers that different battery manufacturers have corresponding numbers to. Their numbers are equivalent in every way to the AG series of batteries. Here, for your convenience is a list of these corresponding numbers:
