Information Article About Sub C NiMH Rechargeable Batteries
MEGAbatteries.com is very pleased to present this information page on Sub C NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargeable batteries.
Sub C cells for building and rebuilding battery packs found in drills, RC battery packs and other rechargeable battery packs.
The Sub C NiMH cell physically resembles a small version of a regular or standard C size battery. Sub C’s measure 23 mm in diameter, x 43 mm in length.
They’re available in both NiMH chemistry (Nickel Metal Hydride) and NiCD (Nickel Cadmium) chemistry, both of which are rechargeable.
If an item you are using Sub C’s for can take either NiMH or NICD, let us explain the benefit of using NIMH Sub C batteries over NiCD ones.
NIMH battery chemistry does not suffer from what is commonly known in batteries as “memory effect”. Memory effect is the lessened or reduced total over all memory of a battery that has been charged before being fully discharged first. The level the battery was “topped off with” is remembered and therefore considered to be the new total capacity of the battery. This effect however, can happen in NICD cells but does NOT happen in NiMH chemistry batteries.
Many people use Sub C’s in their cordless power tools (drills etc...) and common manufacturers of these drills are Dewalt, Ryobi, Makita, and Bosch. However, the Sub C cells in cordless drills are more often than not, the NICD kind and not NiMH as they come with built-in chargers that are appropriate for NICD chemistry recharging only.
NiMH Sub C’s however, would be the choice for use in RC toys and electric guns, and electric vehicles like cars and bicycles as a few examples.
NiMH Sub C batteries are equally used in industry as part of their own internal operations, not just inside the products they manufacture. NiMH Sub Cs because of their smaller size, have applications all their own. There are battery chargers will charge NiMH and NiCd batteries in all sorts of sizes: AA, AAA, C, Sub C, D, and 9 Volt. Sub C NiMH rechargeable batteries are high in capacity and therefore will run, say, a drill (on battery power) for a long period of time. When we say capacity, we mean milliampere hours. This is abbreviated as mAh, and the higher the rating of the mAh, (displayed numerically), the longer the run time that 1 full single charge will give you. 1 full single charge = equals one charge cycle. The length of time it takes one full charge to become depleted of power. Sub C NiMH batteries offer up to 1000 charge cycles. Currently, the standard capacity for Sub C NiMH rechargeable batteries is between 4200 mAh and 4500 mAh (milliampere hours).
Sub C NiMH batteries are available with tabs on them, or without tabs on them. What’s a tab? It’s what sticks out on either end for the purpose of soldering to another cell as is required in the building of battery packs. For many, it’s a handy convenience to have these tabs directly on the batteries already and for the do-it-yourself-er who wishes to weld the tabs on him/herself. Getting them without tabs and welding them on by themself, is an option as well.
