Information Article about 9 Volt NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) Rechargeable Batteries

Here, we provide some fundamentals about  9 volt NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) rechargeable batteries. We write this article to help you understand some of the basics about  this rechargeable battery before you purchase it, if that’s what you’re in the market for.

9 volt NiCd batteries, are actually an older generation, an older technology,  in rechargeable battery chemistry.

The newer technology is called 9 Volt NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydride).  9 volt NiCds are however, cheaper than NiMh,  but there are differences between the two chemistries that account for this price difference. As with everything else, we get what we pay for. While both chemistries of 9 volt are actually 8.4 volts, here are some comparisons between the two.

1)     NiCd rechargeable batteries can suffer from memory-effect. Memory effect is the reduced total power of a battery when re-charged before the battery was fully drained. In NiCd chemistry, there will be this new, lower amount of power remembered, if they are charged before depletion. In other words, before they are “dead”. In NiMh chemistry however, there exists no potential for memory effect. Therefore, one can confidently charge and re-charge NiMh rechargeable batteries without regard for how much power remained inside the battery at time of recharge.

2)     A good feature of NICD chemistry, is that they self-discharge at a slower pace than NiMH batteries. This means that  they can remain unused longer than NiMhs without losing as much power, as quickly.!

A 9 volt NiCd rechargeable battery is an ideal and equivalent replacement for a 9 volt alkaline battery. Any device that can operate on a 9 Volt Alkaline, can also accommodate a 9 Volt NiCd.

NiCds are best applied to equipment that operate on low-power requirements, meaning, not power-hungry devices. For devices which do draw a lot of power, (they’re often called high-drain applications), you’d be better off using a 9 volt NiMh chemistry battery which does not suffer from memory effect and offer a higher mAh rating. MAh ratings equal run-time. The higher the rating in milliampere hours, the longer the run-time that battery will operate before needing a charge.

9 volt NiCd rechargeable batteries are available in 7.2 volt and 9.6 volt, along with the 8.4 volt mentioned.

Always buy batteries and battery accessories, like battery chargers, adapters, testers and organizers or racks, from a reputable battery seller, who is eager to provide you with accurate technical information before they make the sale!
