NiCD (Nickel Cadmium) Rechargeable Batteries NiCD (Nickel Cadmium) rechargeable batteries which are very commonly used today in a multitude of applications, including consumer electronic products, in industry/manufacturing and in many government departments including the military, disaster relief organizations and a host of many other agencies. Often times, they are the number one choice for consumers who use solar lights but of course, they have loads of other applications such as: wall or desk clocks, cordless phones, remote-controls, and that’s just naming a few. The reason that NiCD rechargeable batteries are the mainstay of battery power within solar lighting is that the charger that is usually built in to the lights will only charge NICD cells. That is why people who use NIMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries in their solar lights find that the lights don’t work. When they come to ask asking them to help them figure it out, because they say their batteries are all fresh and they’re at a loss to why the lights don’t work, we’re happy to set them straight. We are happy to provide these sort of everday tid-bits of battery knowledge on our site, available for all to read and refer to. NiCD rechargeable batteries are available in the following battery sizes: AA, AAA,C, Sub C,D, and 9 Volt. Additionally, we offer NiCad Batteries with Tabs to Build Battery Packs, and we carry NiCD batteries and Charger Combos! NiCD batteries are typically best for low-drain products because on average, they deliver roughly one third (1/3) the capacity of Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries.Today’s cameras for example, are not low-drain devices. They require a lot of power to operate and therefore fall into more of a high-drain battery category and as such, are not best powered by NiCD batteries. By contrast, solar lighting for example, are perfect applications for Nickel Cadmium Battery use. All batteries self discharge. This simply means that they “leak” out power (leak is our ‘layman” term), when not in use. Simply sitting on the shelf (idle), some energy from the battery seeps out. In NiCD battery chemistry, the discharge rate is significantly slower than in NIMH batteries – another interesting feature that appeals to many. Their NiCD batteries therefore, will retain much of their total charge, for longer than NiMH. Should you only wish to use your NiCD batteries once in a while, you can be more assured that they will still have power remaining in them even if you haven’t picked one up off the shelf in months and months. Of course, it’s always a good idea to own a handy battery tester! This device can tell you in seconds, the strength of your batteries. Whether or not they should be charged (as in the case of rechargeable batteries) and whether or not they have any strength left in them at all, (as in the case of non-rechargeable batteries such as Alkaline or Lithium batteries). Note that non-rechargeable batteries are also called single-use, throw-away, and disposable. Here is somewhat of a "drawback" that NiCD batteries have. They are cheaper in price than NIMH but this particular feature tells the story of why.... NiCD batteries can experience an effect known as “memory effect”. Many people have heard the term here or there but might not be quite clear on what it means. Memory effect is the result of charging a battery that has not fully been emptied of power first. In NiMH technology, this does NOT happen but in NiCD technology, it can. NiCD batteries must be “dead” at the time of charge so as to preserve the original, total energy capacity the battery was made with. If it’s charged before it’s dead, the battery “remembers” the new level of storage capability and this new level becomes the battery’s new total power capacity. To preserve the total run time 1 full charge cycle, always charge all NiCD batteries once they are completely empty. Please scroll up to the top of this page if you’re interested in seeing our inventory (in-house) of NiCD rechargeable batteries. We have indexed this category in sub-divisions of the same NiCD chemistry. You’ll find AA NiCD, AAA NiCD, C NiCD, D NiCD, 9 Volt NiCD, and Sub C NICD.
