] 9 Volt NIMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) Low Discharge Rechargeable Batteries 9 Volt Low discharge NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargeable batteries can retain approximately 80% of their power for up to 2 years. Low Discharge, (also known as Low Self-Discharge-LSD) refers to the technology that allows only minimal charge to escape from a battery when the battery is not being used. Low Discharge NiMH 9 Volts (and all low discharge for that matter) are ideal for people who use their batteries only infrequently and find that their batteries are sitting on the shelf much of the time, not in use. To protect the investment of those batteries of course, an NIMH 9 Volt battery charger must be purchased to keep them in ideal working order and strength. You see, where regular (standard) NiMH 9 Volt batteries are concerned, the discharge rate is higher. This means that the battery, (when it’s not being used) will end up drained of power quickly, usually at around 40 to 60 days. Let’s not forget that as with all rechargeable batteries (NICD, NIMH, LI-ION), 9 Volt NiMH batteries must be charged when you first get them. Many consumers are not aware of that. Because they all discharge continually, (once again, even when not in use), they are all sold with only a little charge in them. They must be charged prior to their first use. This can be done when you first get them, or prior to the first time you will be using them. HOWEVER, in low discharge batteries, they are often sold as READY to USE. Meaning, they do not have to be recharged prior to use. This is due to their slow rate of discharge. It’s wise to own a battery tester (we sell those at MEGAbatteries.com!), to verify the actual charge state of all your batteries. Best to know what level of power remains in them prior to charge, and to determine if they do need to be recharged! Low Discharge batteries were first brought to market by Sanyo Corporation back in 2005. Since then of course, many other battery manufacturers have begun offering their own versions of low discharge batteries as well. LSD rechargeable batteries are most suited for applications which demand high power. A device which drains the power of a battery at a high level, (called high-drain) in such products as: digital cameras and other photography equipment, RC products, some electronic toys, etc… are items that many consumers choose to use LSD batteries in because of the performance they deliver. They are also ideal, interestingly, for low-drain devices that only use small amounts of power to operate. Some of these include: clocks and remote controls, just to name a couple. Here, we discuss the fundamentals about what makes 9 Volt rechargeable batteries in NIMH so popular in the first place. In case you’re not aware, 1 fundamental feature that greatly distinguishes them NiCD (Nickel Cadmium) rechargeable batteries is that they do not suffer from “memory effect”. Many people have heard of this term but oftentimes, it’s been our experience that they don’t quite know what it means. It’s important to learn about this. Memory Effect happens when a battery has not been fully drained prior to being charged. If the battery still had “juice” left in it, it can actually remember” the new, lower level of power it had at the point it was “topped off” with. This forever changes the total battery power to a new, LOWER total battery power level. Well, this effect, can happen in NiCD batteries. They do “care” about when they are recharged. So it’s necessary to always fully deplete an NiCD battery before recharging, so you avoid memory effect and thus, protect the power of the battery. The power the battery was manufactured to deliver. This memory effect does NOT happen in NIMH. What a wonderful technology! Imagine, never having to have concern for when to charge your batteries. Charge your NIMH anytime. Low Discharge batteries included! In Low Self-Discharge technology, not only is the stored battery power released more slowly over time but as a result, it lengthens the time between charges because it takes longer for an LSD battery to become “dead”. An example of a big user of LSD batteries is schools. Becacuse they remain closed for extended periods of time, (summer months, Christmas Holiday Season etc… they benefit greatly from LSD batteries, which retain much (most) of their charge during these periods of non-use. They close from say, June to September, return in September and know that their battery inventory, for labs, media departments, the library, classrooms, administration etc… all still are read to go!
