First off, what is a battery pack? It’s a battery comprised up of individual battery cells inside attached/encased to form a single battery component. To illustrate this more clearly, here’ s an example:  A 9.6 Volt battery pack, is really 8 single 1.2 Volt cells grouped together. One could say that as long as there are two or more individual cells inside a battery pack, then it is in fact a battery pack. But why do these exist? Well, many consumer electronic products are built at the factory with battery packs instead of using single cells. When these batteries need to be replaced, they need to be replaced as what they are, which is a battery pack. Sometimes, purchasing a new battery pack at the store can be as expensive as the whole product was to begin with that hold the original battery pack. These packs are made from NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) chemistry.

FYI: It is important to be aware that NiCD batteries, are not immune from memory effect. This means they CAN experience it. In plain English, what this means for the NiCD battery user, is that they ought to be recharged when they have become fully discharged and not when they still have power remaining in them. Otherwise the potential exists for their “memory” to become lessened or reduced.

In NiCD chemistry, the battery could “remember” the amount of power it had when it was charged and consider this to be its’ new total capacity of power. Always charge your NiCD batteries (battery packs and individual cells) once they are fully discharged.

The selection of 8.4 volt battery packs on this page are made from NiMH battery technology and thus, are immune from memory effect as memory effect does NOT occur in NIMH battery chemistry. They cost more than NICD but the luxury they offer is that they can be recharged without regard for how much battery power remains in them at the time of charge.
