] 9 Volt (Nickel Cadmium) Rechargeable Batteries 9 Volt Nickel Cadmium (NICD) rechargeable batteries are very popularly used today in the power hungry devices and equipment. They offer long-lasting, reliable performance. In addition, you can expect approximately 500 charge cycles per battery. With 500 cycles, 9 Volt NICD batteries will serve you a very long time and this alone, saves you money over using non-rechargeable Alkaline batteries. (Other terms for non-rechargeable are: single-use, disposable, and throw-away). 9 Volt NICD batteries can be used in any product that uses 9 Volt batteries. All batteries self discharge. This simply means that they “leak” out power (leak is our ‘layman” term), when not in use. Simply sitting on the shelf (idle), some energy from the battery seeps out. In NiCD battery chemistry, the discharge rate is significantly slower than in NIMH batteries – another interesting feature that appeals to many. Their NiCD batteries therefore, will retain much of their total charge, for longer than NiMH technology batteris. Should you only wish to use your 9 Volt NiCD batteries once in a while, you can be more assured that they will still have power remaining in them even if you haven’t picked one up off the shelf in months and months. Of course, it’s always a good idea to own a handy battery tester! This device can tell you in seconds, the strength of your batteries. Whether or not they should be charged (as in the case of rechargeable batteries) and whether or not they have any strength left in them at all, (as in the case of non-rechargeable batteries such as Alkaline or Lithium batteries). Note that non-rechargeable batteries are also called single-use, throw-away, and disposable. Something we routinely talk about on our site is the subject of which batteries to use in smoke detectors. This is a matter of great safety and as a public service to our visitors, it bears repeating. NEVER use rechargeable batteries in smoke detectors! Smoke detectors use 9 Volt Batteries, but the ones to use, ONLY, are non rechargeable, like Alkaline or Lithium. Never use NICD, never use NIMH, never use Lithium-Ion. Rechargeable batteries self discharge over time, (yes, NICD’s rate is slower) but still they self discharge. Non rechargeable batteries are the much safer option, really to be perfectly sure they are working, the only option, for use in smoke detectors as this is designed to be life-saving device. Here’s somewhat of a "drawback" that 9 Volt NiCD batteries have. It doesn’t have to be a drawback if you understand it and treat it accordingly. Here’s what we mean. While NiCD cells are cheaper in price than NIMH, they can experience (sustain) what is known as “memory effect”. Many people have heard the term here or there but might not be quite clear on what it means. Memory effect is result. It’s the result of charging a battery that has not fully been emptied of power first. In NiMH technology, this does NOT happen but in NiCD technology, it can. NiCD batteries must be “dead” at the time of charge so as to preserve the original, total energy capacity the battery was made with. If it’s charged before it’s dead, the battery “remembers” the new level of storage capability and this new level becomes the battery’s new total power capacity. To preserve the total run time 1 full charge cycle is mean to provide, always charge all NiCD batteries once they are completely empty.
