Here we discuss some fundamentals about NICD chemistry that perhaps some of our readers are not aware of. We aim not only to be a battery and battery charger seller, but also a provider of battery and charger information.

Because NiCD cells have a slower self discharge rate than NiMH cells, they can remain idle on the shelf (unused) and still retain not only much, but most of their power/charge. This is a very valuable component to many battery users who intend to use their batteries only infrequently. They can be more assured that when do they reach for a battery that’s been just collecting dust, that it will be able to perform!

However, having said that, there is one “Down-side” to NiCD over NIMH technology.

It’s not actually a down side, if you understand it and treat it accordingly. Here’s the deal: NiCD batteries can sustain an effect called Memory Effect. NiMH batteries do not suffer this effect. For those of you not familiar with what it means, it is this:

Memory effect is actually a result! It’s the result of charging a battery before it has become fully depleted of power. In a battery that can sustain memory effect, if it’s charged before being “dead”, it will only be topped off and this new level, (the point it was topped off from), will become the battery’s new total amount of power. Clearly this can drastically shorten the runtime of a battery. In NIMH technology, this effect doesn’t occur. It’s quite a freedom for many to charge and recharge NIMH batteries because don’t have to wait until those batteries have run out of power.

As with all rechargeable batteries, it’s necessary to own a good quality battery charger so as to capture the full set of charge cycles the batteries were manufactured to have.
