AA and AAA NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) Rechargeable Battery Combinations
In most households today, you’ll find both AA and AAA size batteries. Because rechargeable batteries are so popular and so widely available, chances are good that those AA and AAA cells are NIMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) rechargeables!
These size batteries operate an enormous host of electronic and electrical devices and most people who use them, prefer to have a ready supply on hand at all times.
Both AA and AAA (called Double A and Triple A) NiMH batteries deliver between 2 and 3 times the power of Nickel Cadmium (abbreviated NiCD) rechargeable batteries and even more than that compared to regular, non-rechargeable Alkaline Batteries. Non rechargeables offer one life span only. They are also commonly called Single Use, Throw-Away and of course, disposable, because they cannot be recharged. NEVER, try to charge non-rechargeable batteries. To do so, poses a very real fire risk.
AA and AAA NiMH batteries are by far the popular choice today for most high-drain devices such. Some of these products include: Digital Cameras and other Photography Equipment like Camera Flashes, Table Top Radios, FlashLights and others, just to name some.
It’s no accident that AA and AAA NiMH’s are so widely used today. They have some impressive features. For all NiMH rechargeable batteries, (AA, AAA, C, Sub C, D, and 9 Volt), there is no such thing as Memory Effect.
Let’s examine what this means for you, the end user of them. Many people have heard the term, but not all know what it means.
Memory effect is a result. It’s what happens to a battery that needed to be fully dead, before being recharged, and wasn’t. If a memory effect battery is charged when it still has some power left in it, it will “remember” the new level of power it has at the time of charge. Say it was ¼ empty at the time of charge. It is therefore, only recharged ¾ worth. It is this ¾ capacity then that becomes the new total level of power for that battery. Well, in NIMH technology, this does not happen, even if the battery is only slightly used. One can charge and recharge NiMH cells without concern for what power was remainingin them at the time of charge. That’s an extremely handy feature for people who are busier than ever throughout time. No Memory Effect in fact is a very valuable feature for a battery to have. Yes, NiMH batteries are more expensive as a result but well worth the price difference considering their memory cannot be reduced due to charging at the “wrong” times. Conversely, in NICD chemistry batteries, (Nickel Cadmium), there does exist the possibility of memory effect. In order to preserve the exact amount of power the NICD battery was manufactured, users are advised to only charge them when the cells are empty of power.
As with all batteries, NiMH chemistry batteries are rated by the mAh (milliampere-hours) they provide. The mAh rating is expressed numerically. Our AA’s span mAh ratings of between 2000 mah and 2700 mah, and our AAA cells span mAh ratings between 700 mah and 1200 mah. As part of our education to you, note that the higher thee rating on any battery, the longer it will last. Another way to put this is, the more Run-Time it will deliver on 1 full charge.
There is a newer generation of NIMH chemistry that is called Low Self Discharge (LSD for short). These batteries retain much of their original charge over a period of even 2 years, compared with standard NiMH cells which quickly self discharge (could be empty in 30-40 days while NOT even in use). LSD batteries are great for users (consumers and institutions alike) who either leave their batteries on the shelf (idle) for extended periods of time, or use them regularly, but prefer the fact that these batteries dispense their energy much more slowly.
AA and AAA NIMH CHARGERS
As with all rechargeable batteries, in order to gain all the life cycles that were intended from them, they must be recharged (restored power) with the use of a battery charger.
A little about the different type of charging technology......
Perhaps you’ve never owned a charger. Perhaps you’ve always used non-rechargeable batteries, such as: Alkaline batteries or Lithium Batteries, and you therefore never needed to own one. You then, might not be aware that there are two main types of charging processes! Two different technologies to do the same job.
One process is called Timer Control Charging and the other is called Smart Charging (also known as Intelligent Charging).
TIMER CONTROL CHARGERS
As the name implies, these chargers operate with an automatic shut off timer that is predetermined and built in during manufacturing. Charging time for different chargers range. Some charge for 4 hours, while others charge for 27 hours. Regardless of how long they charge for, the point is that they STOP charging AUTOMATICALLY at this pre-set amount of time. Timer Control Battery chargers are inexpensive. Very inexpensive but understand that all they do is charge the batteries in it for NON-NEGOTIABLE amount of time. This means that ALL The batteries inside it receive THE SAME AMOUNT of charge. But what happens when some batteries need less, or more? What happens to the batteries that were only used a little bit and only require a small topping off? What about the batteries that were almost dead at the time of charge if they are then charged for 15 hours? What happens is this:
Some batteries become overcharged and some batteries remain undercharged. Let us explain here that batteries that have become overcharged, are ruined. Ready for the trash! Garbag-io! Batteries that are undercharged are not ruined – but they won’t give the use the run time they were intended to deliver. And sooner rather than later, they’ll need to be charged again. With all this, less than outstanding news, why would people still choose timer-control battery chargers when they buy a charger? Simple. It’s price! Perhaps they paid so little for their batteries, perhaps they were FREE, that they don’t mind losing them to t he trash by accidently overcharging them in a timer-control charger. The price of this type of charger is much less expensive than smart chargers and oftentimes it’s just a matter of budget. All they can afford to pay is the price of a timer-control charger. To be honest, for the user who always waits until their batteries are completely dead, this type of charger is good. It’s just that many of us, if not most, don’t keep track of the juice left in each of our individual batteries. When they get a little low, we usually want to top them off
SMART CHARGERS (Also called Intelligent Chargers)
These chargers have the technology and therefore the ability to evaluate and actually detect the charge remaining for each battery in it. If some is half full, it will be charged to full. If another is only 1/3 empty, it will be replaced a third’s worth. In the case with NIMH, as we mentioned earlier do not suffer memory effect, it’s an ideal choice to use an intelligent charger. Even if a battery has only ¼ the power left, topping it off does not produce a new memory for the battery. It can do this based on a completely different technology than Timer-Controlled chargers. Smart chargers actually treat each battery within it, individually and detect exactly the correct amount of recharging each one needs. Once a specific battery has been replenished, it receives what’s called a Trickle Charge just to keep it topped off until the battery is removed from the charger. Kind of keeping a cup of coffee on a hot plate just to keep it warm and not cool off. Does that makes sense? As a result, in Smart Charging technology, there’s no worry that batteries might become over or undercharged. It’s well worth the investment to protect the battery investment. Clearly, it’s easy to understand the wide preference to use smart charging technology to preserve the battery performance and total life span.
