D NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) Rechargeable Batteries
Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable batteries (abbreviated NiMH) are a very popular battery chemistry used today in countless consumer electronic devices and in industry as well. D size NiMH cells are strong! They deliver typically two-three times the power of Nickel Cadmium (abbreviated NiCd) rechargeable batteries and thus, are widely used in such high-drain devices as Digital Photography Equipment, Camera Flashes, Radios, Flash Lights, and the list goes on and on...
One of the most notable features, (really it’s quite a benefit), is that D size NiMH rechargeable batteries (all NiMH cells in fact) are immune from experiencing “memory effect”. It’s a term many have heard of but not as many actually know the meaning of. Being immune from memory effect means you can recharge this type of chemistry without any regard for how much energy remains in it at the time it is recharged. Some batteries are “dead” at the time of recharge. Others, still have a little bit of juice in them. Sometimes even more than a little bit! In NIMH technology, it doesn’t matter what remains in the battery. They can each be topped off when what they each require and will still have the full power capacity they were manufactured with. A battery chemistry that CAN sustain memory effect in is the NICD, or Nickel Cadmium Rechargeable battery. Not as advanced as the NiMH, the NiCD must be fully depleted of power prior to recharging so the battery does not “REMEMBER” the new level of power that it was at the time it was topped off In NiMH batteries, memory (total amount of power) does not shorten or reduce.
Additionally, NiMH rechargeables deliver up to 1000 charge cycles. This is a big increase over the single life span of say, Alkaline batteries (which are not rechargeable).
As with all batteries, NiMH chemistry batteries are rated by the mAh (milliampere-hours) they provide. The higher the rating on your D NiMH battery, the more runtime it will provide.
Something very worthwhile for large volume users of D NiMH, or even small users but users that only use their batteries occasionally, is a newer technology in rechargeable battery chemistry called LSD or in it’s long form: Low Self Discharge. This simply means that the rate at which the battery discharges power, when idle (not in use) is substantially lower than in standard or regular NiMH batteries. This ensures that the battery will still have lots and lots of life left in it, even if kept on the shelf over a period even spanning 2 years. That’s a very, very handy feature for people and/or institutions who might find themselves closed and/or not using their cells over extended periods of time.
D NiMH Battery Chargers: Clearly, chargers are necessary in order to preserve the entire life span (all the charge cycles) designed by the battery manufacturer. The consumer has multiple choices now-a-days in the selection available of Battery Chargers on the market. There are those that are dedicated to D size NiMH batteries, those that are for both NiMH and NICD and those that are called Universal, charging more than one type of chemistry and/or size. In addition, there are those that operate on completely different forms of technology.
One of the processes is called Timer-Control Battery Chargers and the other kind is known as Smart Battery Charger. Smart battery chargers are also referred to as Intelligent Chargers. These next paragraphs will clearly illustrate why they are so intelligent.
Overview about TIMER CONTROL Battery Chargers
As the name implies, these chargers operate with an automatic shut off timer that is predetermined and built in during manufacturing. Charging time for different chargers range. Some charge for 4 hours, while others charge for 27 hours. Regardless of how long they charge for, the point is that they STOP charging AUTOMATICALLY at this pre-set amount of time. Timer Control Battery chargers are inexpensive. Very inexpensive but understand that all they do is charge the batteries in it for NON-NEGOTIABLE amount of time. This means that ALL The batteries inside it receive THE SAME AMOUNT of charge. But what happens when some batteries need less, or more? What happens to the batteries that were only used a little bit and only require a small topping off? What about the batteries which were almost dead at the time of charge if they are then charged for 15 hours? What happens is this:
Some batteries become overcharged and some batteries remain undercharged. Let us explain here that batteries that have become overcharged, are ruined and ready for the trash! Batteries that are undercharged however, are not ruined – but they won’t give the use the run time they were intended to deliver. And sooner rather than later, they’ll need to be charged again. With all this, less than outstanding news, why would people still choose timer-control battery chargers when they buy a charger? Simple. It’s price! Perhaps they paid so little for their batteries, perhaps they were FREE, that they don’t mind losing them to t he trash by accidently overcharging them in a timer-control charger. The price of this type of charger is much less expensive than smart chargers and oftentimes it’s just a matter of budget. All they can afford to pay is the price of a timer-control charger. To be honest, for the user who always waits until their batteries are completely dead, this type of charger is good. It’s just that many of us, if not most, don’t keep track of the juice left in each of our individual batteries. When they get a little low, we usually want to top them off
Here, we discuss SMART/INTELLIGENT CHARGERS.....
The best part about Smart Chargers is that they’re actually smart!! They have the ability to treat each battery placed inside it, individually. This means that each battery receives charge to the degree it requires it. One battery might be half full and only need to replenished half. Another battery in the charger might be ¾ empty and would need and receive ¾ the topping off power. This is quite an amazing technology! Yes, it costs more than does a timer control charger but no batteries can become over or undercharged in one. Over time, this higher price, greatly become absorbed (amortized) by the preservation of batteries it gives you. Your entire battery inventory can no longer be at risk for ruin, with a smart battery charger!
Battery Testers If you have D NiMH batteries, and of course a good quality battery charger to go with them, occasionally you will want to test the power of your batteries. You can pick up an NiMH battery tester that will test all NiMH battery sizes (AA, AAA, C, D, and 9 Volt), for a nominal price which is very worthwhile because it will serve you well over a long period of time. It might not be something you’d ordinarily think of owning, but if you have one, the occasion will arise that you'll be glad you do.
Battery Adapters are extremely handy little inventions! Say you require a D size battery for your table-top radio but all you have are AA batteries. If you had a D size battery adapter, in just 5 seconds, you have the PHYSICAL equivalent of a D size battery! All it is, is an empty sleeve (or shell), that houses smaller batteries in it. The size of the adapter is D and therefore will fit into the battery compartment of your radio perfectly. The power within it might only be that of a AA, but you will still be able to power the radio because the D Adapter fits in it, whereas the AA would not have. Such a simple idea. So practical!
Battery Organizers and Racks
D size NiMH batteries rolling around on your workshop table or travelling from the front to the back of your kitchen drawer or utility cupboard? Why not get a battery rack to support all your batteries, neatly and of course, keep them where you leave them! No more rolling onto the floor! Battery Racks and organizers eliminate having to crawl around looking for the batteries that got away..........
